As a public sector employee in California, we are facing (sadly inevitable) cuts-somewhat serious. Much of the anegr, however, is turned towards the more vigorously organized and uncompromising fire fighters union. I have to admit I share that anger because their unwillingness to accept any cuts means that other people will face deeper cuts...

So...the system successfully divides us among ourselves.Brian Mnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5461044.post-21557445739071717842011-03-11T22:15:55.145-05:002011-03-11T22:15:55.145-05:00The current anxiety that seems to permeate our cul...The current anxiety that seems to permeate our culture at all levels effects some interesting phenomena. One that I have noticed lately, and welcome, is a trend away from ideological identity. People feel disconnected from whatever they may have believed in the past. On the down side I see cynicism, bewilderment and depression. On the positive side I see a greater openness to others as we genuinely experience empathy for each other. I think what you describe on the bus or at work is this deep experience of empathy that has the capacity to transcend differences between each other. Creating a class of people is a sort of nominalism that lets us distant ourselves from particular individuals; something that is hard to do on a daily basis as toil together to stay afloat.Aboniloxhttp://abonilox.netnoreply@blogger.com
