The Other Israel

My friend Alyssa was trying to get me to join the Women in Black movement when the war first started in Iraq. I didn't have that many black clothes.

I don't know...the closest I have gotten into political symbolism is carrying the UN flag in some peace marches.

The idea of wearing black for peace is a little too symbolic for me. Kind of like eating all your vegetables on your plate because "children are starving in Africa." (As if your eating those nasty tasting vegetables is going to change the outcome for those children.)

Sometimes in the peace movement I got the feeling that people were more involved in "doing something" than in whether what they were doing might be effective. Did you notice similar things in Pennsylvania?
