To me, this was one of the most important images to come out of the war, particularly for Americans, who don't really understand how our policies both affect and are interpreted by others...
I think it's gotten to the point where many Americans have a hard time even recognizing Arabs as people; there is an impression that they're all terrorists, because that's the only thing the government and news agencies report.
I've frequently thought that if Americans could speak with just one Iraqi, the war would quickly become unsupportable. Instead, we view other people through the lens of our government, not as they are.
Maybe that is why I knew that this war was a sham--because I had taken arabic and belly dancing from one of the most beautiful and strong women I'd ever met. And she'd already busted all my stereotypes about Iraqis.
In terms of the Newsweek article, I think the memorandum from John Yoo is almost as creepy as the photo. I mean, it's one thing to quote these memos, but seeing the actual documents is much more vivid. I'm glad they they made the pdf file of it rather than just quoting it.
