America's Failing Health

The New York Times
In most advanced countries, the government provides everyone with health insurance. In America, however, the government offers insurance only if you're elderly (Medicare) or poor (Medicaid). Otherwise, you're expected to get private health insurance, usually through your job. But insurance premiums are exploding, and the system of employment-linked insurance is falling apart.

As soon health care begins to be seen as a crisis not just for the public but also for employers, we might be surprised how fast the state moves to correct it...

In case anyone misses it, we were discussing health insurance in your Socialism Saves entry. Just last night I wrote long winded analysis about why I think our health care system is self destructing based on my experience in health insurance.

It's kind of far down the list of threads, but at least one person wrote an interesting commenting after mine, so I'm not the only one looking down the page. :-)

My OP-ED spin is that health care is so costly because of lawyers like John Edwards.

Maybe health care is so costly because it's so easy to attack?
Or maybe it's because we treat a human illness like a system, rather then as a need. Kind of like treating Humans as Resources? The idea of treating the illness while keeping costs at a maintainable level, rather then treating the patient so they can return to being productive members of society.
Or maybe it's expensive because we don't use the barter system anymore... I'd give up a cow for a back massage right now! or some Motrine.
