Let Them Eat Prozac

from MSNBC
A campaign worker for President Bush said Thursday American workers unhappy with low-quality jobs should find new ones-—or pop a Prozac to make themselves feel better.

"Why don’t they get new jobs if they’re unhappy—-or go on Prozac?” said Susan Sheybani, an assistant to Bush campaign spokesman Terry Holt.

There was a really good Dr. Who episode about some culture that had it's workers all souped up on drugs as a means of control. It was kind of like Metropolis, except not quite. A lot of workers rights films seem to be reminiscent of Metropolis.

Or soma from Brave New World. In our country it's a hugely profitable industry based on the discontentedness of most of the people. Because it's so profitable, the focus is on treating the symptoms and not curing the condition--which would require looking at why people aren't happy in the first place.

There are many examples of this, for instance, if you look closely at issues like crime or terrorism. Being "tough on crime" doesn't mean addressing the economic realities which encourage crime; it means building more prisons, which happens to be one of the fastest growing industries we have. Similarly, the "war on terror" is being waged as a windfall to weapons manufacturers and defense contractors for products that aren't even effective against terrorists--Bush's big missile defense initiative, for instance.
